George Gonsalves

George Aurelio Gonsalves, Sr., age 91, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2025, in Sarasota, Florida. George was born on October 22, 1934, in Georgetown, Guyana and attended St. Stanislaus College there. George served as a Boy Scout Group Leader for many years at St. Francis Own, Georgetown, Guyana and will be fondly remembered for his accordion leadership at the many campfires. He was an accomplished accordion player. He lived a long and full life marked by warmth, humor, and a deep love for family.

He was the beloved husband of Joan (nee Persaud) and a devoted father to Gail Oppermann, George Gonsalves, Jr., Terence Gonsalves (Lisa), and Brian Gonsalves (Keri). He took great joy in his grandchildren Kennedy, Evan, and Delaney. His presence will be deeply missed by his siblings Rosemary Digby, Nellie Hahnfeld, Joseph (Neil) Gonsalves, David Gonsalves, and Aubrey Gonsalves.

George was preceded in death by his parents, George Adolphus Gonsalves and Celestine Ursula Rodrigues, as well as his sisters Anne da Silva Jardine, Jean Pereira, and Sally Perreria.

Known for his kindness, patience, wit, and sense of humor, George brought joy to those around him. He had a deep appreciation for music and cherished the simple pleasures of life—especially sharing a toast with family and friends or sitting on the beach watching the waves roll in. His ability to bring laughter into any room made him a treasured companion and confidant. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.

A Funeral Mass will be held on December 22, 2025, at 10:00 AM Eastern Time (EST) at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 425 S. Tamiami Trail, Osprey, FL. If you are unable to be with us in person, we invite you to honor his memory by joining the service virtually:
