George Earl Huffman passed peacefully to his Heavenly home on November 26, 2025, in Waco, Texas surrounded by his family. George was born in Newton, Kansas on June 27, 1944. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Nyra Huffman, his brother Eugene Huffman, and his wife Jane Cooper Huffman.
George is survived by his wife, Cynthia Huffman; his son Steve Huffman and wife Renee Sprinkle; his son Aaron Huffman and wife Elizabeth Schexnailder; his daughter Jennifer Cordon and husband Matthew Cordon; and his daughter Sarah Oxford and husband Colin Oxford. He is also survived by his grandchildren Austin Sprinkle; Amos Huffman and wife Shelby; Janee Adams and husband Matt; Chandler Cordon and wife Katelyn; Madelynne Cordon; Erin Howard; Seth Schexnailder-Huffman; Caroline Schexnailder-Huffman; Brady Everett; Colt Everett; Bentley Oxford; and Chase Oxford and many nieces and nephews. He was also looking forward to the arrival of his first great-grandchild.
George earned a B.S.Ed. from Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia, Kansas in 1966 and taught elementary school at Westview Elementary School in Olathe, Kansas for three years. In 1970 he earned a Master of Science from Kansas State University and began his career at Amarillo College in the Lynn Library Learning Center. In 1981 he continued his education at Texas Woman's University (which he always called Texas Person's University!!) and earned his Master of Library Science. As director of learning resources at Amarillo College, George was a key leader in innovative projects across the state. His work in the 1970s and 1980s helped create the Harrington Library Consortium which brought a new model for resource sharing to the region. George served on several boards related to libraries in the state of Texas, and in 1999 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Texas Library Association in honor of his many contributions to the development of Texas libraries. At that time, the award had only been presented 18 times since the creation of TLA in 1902. He retired from Amarillo College after 30 years of service.
After several years of retirement spent making wonderful memories traveling with the 5th wheel, George decided to go back to work. He inquired about a position as a "gofer" at Brooke Pipe & Supply, and good friend Guy said he needed a gofer with a CDL. So, it didn't take long for George to take the written test, driving test, and before you know it, he was driving the big truck hauling irrigation pipe all over the Texas panhandle into Oklahoma and Kansas. He continued this job for nearly 13 years, until his health forced him to retire.
George was known for his willingness to help others whether they were family, coworkers, or neighbors. There wasn't anything he could not fix, and he kept every bolt, nail, screw, piece of wire he ever had because he might need it!
The family is planning a private memorial at a later date.
