A long-time resident of Singapore, Gerard Abbazia Hekker died on October 19, 2025 in Jakarta, Indonesia of graft vs. host disease and other complications following a stem cell transplant to treat myelofibrosis. Gerard was buried in Jeruk Purut Cemetery near his home in Jakarta.
Born in New York City on September 10, 1960, Gerard was the oldest child of Gerard Joseph Hekker and Corinne Abbazia Hekker. He grew up in Stuyvesant Town and was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School, Dartmouth College, and the University of San Francisco School of Law. Gerard also studied with the Joffrey Ballet and at Tunghai University and Shaanxi Normal University.
Admitted in California, England, and Wales, Gerard practiced corporate law with various law firms in Singapore, Jakarta, and Los Angeles – including Duane Morris LLP, Sidley Austin LLP, Skadden Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, Coudert Brothers, and Graham & James LLP. He retired as a partner with Duane Morris in 2025.
Whether he was studying classical ballet, Tai Chi, Mandarin, or bass guitar, or training as a competitive skier, swimmer, or triathlete, Gerard used his wit and compassion to collect friends all over the world. He loved long runs, biking (even when it involved mountain lion encounters), complex corporate transactions, practical jokes, and sunsets on the beach in Bali. Mostly, Gerard cherished spending time with his loved ones and friends.
Gerard is survived by his wife Nunuk Sutriawati, daughter Stella Hekker (Alex Mathison), former wife (and Stella’s mother) Hsin-Yu Kuo, step daughter Farah Mubbina, and sisters Maria Hekker (Jeffrey Tice) and Gretchen Wilson (Jeffery Wilson), as well as his many nieces, nephews, grand nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew.
Gerard’s family is grateful to the Bone Marrow Donor Programme Singapore (BMDP), the Singapore Red Cross, and the Indonesian Red Cross. The BMDP coordinated Gerard’s stem cell transplant (finding an anonymous donor in Germany when his sisters were not a full match). The Red Cross facilitated the many blood transfusions that Gerard received during the last year of his life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider supporting the important work of these or similar organizations by becoming a blood or stem cell donor, volunteering, or making a monitory contribution.
