Gertrude Ann “Gertie” Hammond (née Roland), age 89, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2025, in Salem, Alabama.

Born on May 22, 1936, in Conneaut, Ohio, Gertrude lived a life marked by perseverance, compassion, and unwavering faith. Her journey was one of service—to her family, her community, and to God. She was a woman of deep conviction and strength whose legacy will live on in the many lives she touched.

At the age of 50, Gertrude achieved a significant milestone by earning her GED, a testament to her determination and commitment to personal growth. Her professional life reflected her nurturing spirit and dedication to caring for others. She worked as a cook and teacher’s aide at a daycare before moving on to serve in a nursing home. Later, she found fulfillment working in home health care—shopping, cooking, and performing light housekeeping for elderly clients. Even into her eighties, she continued house cleaning until the age of 84. Serving the elderly community was not just a job for Gertrude; it was a calling that she embraced with love.

Gertrude’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. A devout Christian and faithful churchgoer, she lived each day guided by scripture and prayer. Her Bible was her constant companion—the road map of her life—and she encouraged others to trust in the Lord’s provision and timing. Known as a true prayer warrior, she interceded daily for her family and friends with steadfast devotion.

She cherished time spent with her children and her grandchildren. Her contagious laughter could often be heard during lively family game nights. Gertrude also found joy in simple pleasures: crocheting beautiful pieces by hand, tending to her flower garden, completing puzzles with care, and taking long walks that allowed her to remain healthy.

Gertrude was known for her homemade fudge and comforting meals. Her hot chocolate became something of a specialty—served with love and remembered fondly by those who enjoyed it.

Gertrude is survived by her daughter Terri Lawler of Alabama; step-son Bruce Hammond and his wife Amanda of Ohio; brothers George Osborne of Alabama, David Osborne of Pennsylvania, Eino Rantamaki of Pennsylvania; sister Lu Ann Ankron of Ohio; grandchildren Rebekah Goss of Alabama, Lily Cline of Missouri, Gary W. Lawler of Indiana, Hannah Holowell of Arkansas, Sarah Niggemann of Arkansas, Joanna Lawler of Oregon, Tina Butler of Ohio, Tammy Beason of South Carolina, Timothy Hiner of Ohio, Velta Moiso of Ohio, Beckie Smith of Ohio, Wanda Marunowski of Tennessee, Keisha Hammond of North Carolina, Patricia Hammond of Oklahoma, Gregory Hammond of North Carolina, and Linda Barnes of Ohio.
