Gilberto Medina, age 83, passed away at Mount Sinai Hospital from acute myeloid leukemia on October 1, 2025, in New York City, New York. Born on March 31, 1942, in Bogotá, Colombia, South America, Gilberto lived a life marked by resilience, warmth, and transformation.
A humble and simple man, Gilberto did not receive formal education but carried with him a wealth of wisdom and a spirit of generosity that touched those around him. Known for his unforgettable laugh—a distinctive cackle that could light up a room—he brought joy to many with his vibrant personality. In his healthier years, Gilberto was always on the move. He had an aversion to staying indoors and preferred to be out in the world, dancing, enjoying life, and helping others whenever he could.
Gilberto spent much of his working life behind the wheel as a gypsy cab driver and later as a medallion (yellow) taxi cab driver in New York City. Through these roles, he became a familiar face to many and found purpose in serving the city's diverse communities.
In his final days, Gilberto experienced a profound spiritual awakening. A lifelong Catholic, he fully received Christ just days before his passing. Surrounded by love and supported by chaplain visits during his hospital stay, he boldly proclaimed his faith in God before undergoing one of his final procedures. Those who witnessed this transformation take comfort in knowing that he is now resting and praising the Lord for all eternity.
One of the most meaningful chapters of Gilberto's life unfolded in his final moments through the deep bond he shared with his stepdaughter Yvette. Though their connection was shaped by complex family dynamics, it blossomed into something beautiful and redemptive. Yvette ensured that Gilberto knew he was loved, cared for, and never alone. He embraced her love wholeheartedly—choosing to live with her before his passing—and expressed how much she meant to him. Their time together brought healing to old wounds and created memories that will endure forever.
Gilberto's love offered Yvette a sense of belonging and affirmation that transcended words. Their relationship became a testament to the power of grace and reconciliation—a holy and miraculous gift that brought peace to both their hearts.
Gilberto Medina's legacy lives on through the laughter he inspired, the kindness he extended, and the love he gave so freely in his final days. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him and may his soul rest in eternal peace.
