Send Flowers Plant A Tree
It is with deep sadness that we share the sudden passing of our mother,
Gloria Elizabeth Nelson, on Sunday, January 4, 2026 -- 78 years old this past September.

Our mother was born in 1947 in the New York City borough of Brooklyn and was named Gloria Elizabeth Evans, daughter of Eleanor Evans (née Keefe) and Samuel Evans -- sister to David and Martin Evans. She spent much of her youth on Jamaica Bay in Broad Channel, Queens and then raised her family on Long Island. She lived a life marked by intelligence, fierce independence, and devotion to the people and causes she held dear.

Gloria graduated and received her BA from St. Josephs College of Long Island at the same time that her children also finished their undergraduate schooling. She then taught public school students, many with significant needs, for a decade and ended her career as an elementary school principal in upstate New York.

Gloria loved the beach, always delighted in learning new things, and found peace in gardening, cooking, baking, and taking meticulous care of her home. She was passionate about social justice and had an unwavering commitment to speaking her mind and defending those who struggled to defend themselves. Whether rallying for fairness, lending a thoughtful perspective in discussions, or helping someone find their own footing, Gloria met life's challenges with courage and conviction. She also enjoyed using her talents as a writer, having her thoughts and ideas published in local periodicals.

Gloria is survived by her three grown children, Matthew, Mark, and Bethany and their spouses, Maureen, Rie, and Rick. She was also the proud grandmother of four: Miles, Matthew, Annie, and Katie. Gloria loved her family and friends, celebrating their milestones and always wanting what was best for them, even when times were tough.

As Gloria's children, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of our family members and to all of Gloria's friends and neighbors. Thank you for your compassion and sympathy as well as the friendship, kindness and love that you have shown to our mother throughout the years.

Rest in Peace
Gloria - Mom - Grandma
