Dr. Gordon Wilson Dowds, 73, passed away on February 22, 2026, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born on May 5, 1952, in Pasadena, California, to Judge Norman Dowds and Martha Jane Dowds.

Gordon attended Princeton University before earning his medical degree from New York Medical College. He completed his residency at County USC Medical Center, where he began the work that would shape the rest of his life: caring for critically ill patients with skill, resolve, and deep commitment.

For much of his career, Gordon practiced in West Hills, California, where he was partner in West Valley Pulmonary and the West Valley Sleep Disorder Center. Through those practices, he cared for patients across the San Fernando Valley in pulmonary and sleep medicine. He also served as a hospitalist at West Hills Hospital, Northridge Hospital, and Los Robles Hospital. He was known for taking the work seriously, for showing up when people needed him most, and for never shying away from the difficult cases.

Around 2015, Gordon began working as a locum tenens physician, traveling across the country to bring his care and experience wherever they were needed. His family is especially proud of the work he did during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he treated critically ill patients in intensive care units across the United States. Even in the later years of his life, he continued practicing medicine, staying true to the work almost until the end.

Outside of medicine, Gordon loved to cook and took particular pride in baking his own sourdough bread. He loved his dogs. He loved the quiet comforts and familiar rhythms of home. He could be wise, caring, stubborn, and hardworking all at once, and that combination made him exactly who he was.

He is survived by his wife, Anat Shabo; his children Andrew Patrick Dowds (Pamela Moreira), Tracy Vitellaro (Mike Vitellaro), Jill Welshans (Jacob Welshans), and Robin Dowds (Or Meiri); his beloved grandchildren Thomas, Grace, Wyatt, Tyson, Jordan , Dylan, and Nathan; and his siblings Curtis Dowds and Mary Anne Amitin.

Gordon was previously married to Mindy Dowds, the mother of his children.

He lived a long life in service to others, and he gave a great deal of himself to that calling. His family will remember him not only for the physician he was, but for the man he was at home and with the people who knew him best: thoughtful, determined, complicated, loving, and deeply committed in the quiet ways that matter most.

Memorial service: 10:00 a.m., March 22, 2026, at Calabasas Civic Center, Founders Hall, 100 Civic Center Way, Calabasas, CA 91302.
