Gordon Niles Hail passed away on November 17, 2025, at the age of 72 in San Francisco, California. Born on March 11, 1953, in Wichita, Kansas, Gordon devoted his life to his family, his friends, and his community.
Gordon was a man of faith, actively involved in the Redwood Church community. His beliefs were reflected in his kindness and the care he extended to others, always putting their needs and well-being ahead of his own.
Gordon's love for the outdoors was profound, enjoying activities including camping, tennis, motorcycle and mountain bike riding, and time on the family ranch in Montana. He loved road trips in the van, cultivating blackberries in the backyard, listening to live music, playing the piano. He found joy in simple pleasures, such as sipping coffee from Plantation Coffee Roastery and spending quality time with his loved ones. He would love to have you over for a BBQ, blackberry pie, and a latte.
Demonstrating great perseverance, Gordon graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, with a degree in Mining Engineering. In addition to his engineering courses, Gordon also focused on PE and geology. This would steer him to coveted vacation spots such as Death Valley and Mount Lassen. Gordon's career spanned over four decades as a cost engineer, where he made significant contributions at Bechtel, Cooper Pugeda Management, and SamTrans. He enjoyed his work, especially the camaraderie he shared with his co-workers, who reciprocated his warmth and respect.
Gordon leaves behind a loving family: his wife of 35 years, Jennifer; his children: daughter Lauren (Zach) Edwards; sons Travis Miller, and Ryan Hail (Katie Ashley); granddaughters, Rowdy Miller and Ada Edwards; his brother, Jeff Hail; his mother, Jean Callahan; his uncle, John "Jack" Jefferson, as well as numerous cousins and lifelong friends. Gordon was predeceased by his grandmother, Vera Jefferson, stepfather, Everett "Glen" Hail, brother, Glen Hail, sister, Tami Hail, and granddaughter, McKenna Miller.
Gordon's life was a testament to his values of love, kindness, and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of Gordon's life will be held in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates contributions be made to the Salvation Army, UCSF Cancer Center, or a charity of your choice.
