Gregory Wallace "Greg" Holmes, 76, passed away on December 17, 2025, in Greenwood, South Carolina.
Born on November 13, 1949, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Greg was the son of the late Wallace and Ruby Holmes. He spent much of his childhood in Walhalla, SC, and was a graduate of Walhalla High School. He attended Anderson College for two years and then completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology at Lander University.
Greg's professional life reflected his deep commitment to helping others. After graduating, he moved to Modesto, California, where he worked at a children's home for several years. He later returned to Greenwood and served as a job developer and counselor. His career path eventually led him to Greenville, where he became a representative for ITT Technical Institute. After retiring from ITT Tech, Greg continued to contribute to his community by working part-time as a legal assistant at McCravy, Newlon, Sturkie & Clardy Law Firm, PA.
In retirement, Greg returned to Greenwood and found a spiritual home at Calvary Chapel church. His faith deepened significantly during this time. He became actively involved in the church community—serving communion, greeting congregants on Sunday mornings, and visiting shut-ins. His sense of purpose and connection with God grew stronger throughout his later years and especially during his illness.
Greg had a wide range of interests that brought him joy and connection with others. A devoted fan of Beatles music, he also closely followed college and NFL football rankings—especially cheering on Clemson University and the Carolina Panthers. He enjoyed watching Fox News and engaging in political discussions with friends. Greg even lent his support to friends' political campaigns over the years. Above all else, he cherished conversation—whether with family or friends—and was known for being humble, optimistic, encouraging, and deeply caring toward others.
For the final five years of his life, Greg resided at the Hampton House in Greenwood. There he made many close friends that became like family to him. During his illness, these friends—as well as many others—were a tremendous support and encouragement. Greg's family is especially grateful for the compassionate care provided by Self Regional Home Health Services, Upper Savannah Respite Care, Always Best Care, and Agape Care during this time.
Greg is lovingly remembered by his brother Steven Larry Holmes (Billie); nieces Leah Holmes Tjemsland (Kristian) and Anna Holmes Hall (Justin); nephew Steven W. Holmes (Monica); nephews Caleb and Joshua Holmes; along with 14 great-nieces and nephews: Elsie, Judah, Marlene, Amos, Ruby, Lily Hall; Matias, Oskar, Simon, Eira Tjemsland; Isla, Owen, Liam and one more expected addition to the Holmes family.
While Greg may not have accumulated many material possessions during his lifetime, he was rich in relationships - the true measure of his legacy. He had an extraordinary ability to make others feel seen and valued. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched with kindness and encouragement. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held on January 18, 2026, at 03:00 PM at Calvary Chapel Greenwood, 2024 Woodlawn Rd.
