Gwendolyn Ann "Gwen" Lopes, age 87, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2025, in Medford, Oregon. Born on March 3, 1938, in Richford, New York, Gwen lived a life marked by devotion to her family, her faith, and her community.

Gwen was the daughter of Ralph and Marjorie Caldwell and grew up surrounded by a large and loving family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Lopes; her daughter, Darlene Cox; her parents; and her brothers George Caldwell, Richard Caldwell, James Caldwell, and Louie Caldwell. She also mourned the loss of her nephew Randy Caldwell.

A dedicated professional with a warm heart and tireless work ethic, Gwen served as the head baker for Newark Unified School District at Memorial High School. Her baked goods were a cherished part of daily lunches and snack bar offerings—fondly remembered by generations of students who looked forward to her treats. Her presence in the school kitchen was more than just about food; it was about care and consistency that nourished both body and spirit.

Beyond her career, Gwen found joy in simple pleasures that reflected her generous spirit and zest for life. She took daily walks that kept her connected to nature and community. A devoted member of her church, she volunteered regularly—giving freely of her time to support others through faith-based service. Gwen also loved jigsaw puzzles and playing games with friends and family, moments filled with laughter and connection that brought people closer together.

Her deep faith was central to who she was. A devout follower of Christ, Gwen lived out her beliefs through acts of kindness and compassion. Those who knew her found comfort in her unwavering love and boundless energy. Her legacy is one of warmth, generosity, and enduring grace.

Gwen's greatest joy came from the family she nurtured across generations. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Karen Alvey and son-in-law Greg Alvey; grandchildren Shaun Blakley (and his wife Joy), Matthew Alvey, Phillip Cox, Jessica Takeuchi (and her husband Kevin); great-grandchildren Cassidy Blakley, Avalon Blakley, Kylee Takeuchi, Kaelyn Takeuchi, and Jakob Takeuchi; as well as sisters Gloria Allen and Sally Neves. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews whose lives were touched by her love.

A celebration of Gwen's life will be held at her local church in Medford shortly after her passing—a fitting tribute to a woman whose faith guided every step she took.

May Gwendolyn Ann Lopes' memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
