Harold Estep

1932 - 2026

Harold Estep, 93, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, in Trinity, Florida. Born on May 28, 1932, in Paynesville, West Virginia, Harold lived a life filled with curiosity, adventure, and a deep love for family and nature.

Harold pursued his education at Concord College in Athens, West Virginia, earning his undergraduate degree before continuing to West Virginia University for graduate studies. In 1957, he left his home state to begin a career in education as a science teacher in the Walled Lake Michigan Public Schools. His dedication to learning led him to serve as Vice Principal of Walled Lake Central High School for many years. Harold's professional career was marked by his passion for fostering curiosity and growth in others—a value he carried and shared throughout his life. As a community leader Harold was a founding member of Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church in Walled Lake and later a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Chrystal River, Florida.

Harold married the love of his life, Nellie Jane Estep, with whom he shared an extraordinary bond for 70 years. Together they raised two children, Pam and Bill, instilling in them a shared love for travel and adventure. Harold and Jane were renowned for their explorations of cities and natural wonders around the world. Whether wandering through woodlands or hiking along trout streams like his cherished Gilchrist Creek, Harold found joy in the beauty of nature. Their adventures were complemented by lively discussions and debates that enriched their partnership.

A voracious reader with an insatiable curiosity about the world, Harold loved stories—both hearing them and sharing them with family, friends, and even strangers. In recent years, he spent much of his time reading aloud to Jane and listening for new birds outside their window. He enjoyed making new friends, watching YouTube videos about antique tractors, and serving as a confidant to his three granddaughters.

Harold’s retirement years were filled with happiness as he traveled across the country in an RV with Jane. They split time between their home in Homosassa, Florida, and their cabin in Atlanta, Michigan—a perfect balance that allowed them to enjoy both warm winters and serene summers.

Harold is survived by his beloved wife Jane; daughter Pam and her wife Karen; daughter-in-law Tracy; brothers Roger Estep, his wife Judy and Larry Estep and his fiancé Carla, sister Beth Belcher and her husband Danny; granddaughters Meili, Arden , and Bergen; step-grandchildren Megan, Nick, and Reily, as well as many dear friends and caregivers who cherished his intelligence and humor. Harold was predeceased by his beloved son Bill Estep; his parents Lawson and Elizabeth Estep; and brothers Lowell and Dale Estep.

Harold’s legacy is one of boundless curiosity, love for nature’s beauty, devotion to family, and an enduring passion for storytelling. He was admired by many friends and acquaintances. People sought his advice and life wisdom. His sense of humor enhanced everyday relationships with folks of all persuasions. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
