It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Harold “Butch” Morris Jr., age 76, of Springfield, Virginia. Butch passed peacefully on January 23, 2026, at Trinity House of Care.
Born on August 27, 1949, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Butch was the only child of the late Harold William Morris and Helen Kinney Morris. He is survived by his beloved daughters, Michelle Barnes (Matt) and Melissa Downs (James); his four cherished grandchildren, Bryleigh and Eliana Barnes, and Adeline and Gabriel Downs; and his close friend and former spouse, Isabel Morris.
Butch was raised in Gouldsboro, Pennsylvania, and graduated from North Pocono High School in 1967, where he proudly served as a pitcher on the baseball team. He went on to attend the University of Notre Dame, earning his degree in 1971.
Following graduation, Butch served his country in the United States Army. His service included a three-year assignment in Panama, where he met Isabel, the mother of his children. In 1988, he was honorably discharged at the rank of Major. He went on to continue his distinguished career in national security at the Defense Intelligence Agency, where he was a respected leader and mentor, admired for his analytical expertise and dedication to mission. He deeply loved his work and served the DIA with loyalty and pride until 2011, when a debilitating stroke forced his retirement.
Above all, Butch treasured time spent with his family. He loved to travel and particularly enjoyed cruises. In his quieter moments, he found joy in reading, completing the daily crossword puzzle, catching the latest movie releases, and faithfully following Notre Dame football.
