Harold Marten Scheuer passed away on October 25, 2025, in Durham, North Carolina. He was 39 years old.

Born on June 9, 1986, in the suburbs of Boston, MA, Harold carried with him fond memories of his early childhood in New England - family gatherings filled with warmth and laughter, toy cars gifted with love, and carefree days playing with friends at Montessori school. These moments would become touchstones of innocence and joy that he cherished throughout his life.

At the age of 9, Harold moved to rural Virginia after his parents retired. There he attended public schools and later pursued education at Fishburne Military School and the Miller School of Albemarle. Driven by a keen intellect and a passion for engineering, he went on to graduate from the University of Virginia with a bachelor's degree in Engineering Science. In 2015, he earned a master's degree in Human Systems Integration from the Naval Postgraduate School - a testament to both his discipline and curiosity about the intricate relationship between people and technology.

Harold served honorably as a Naval Officer in the United States Navy from 2008 to 2017. His commitment to service extended beyond duty; it was rooted in a deep belief in freedom and responsibility. After concluding his military career, Harold continued supporting national defense by lending his expertise to Department of Defense programs based in Washington, DC, where his technical insight helped shape critical systems.

In 2023, Harold began working as a Human Factors Engineer for GE Vernova in Wilmington, NC. In this role - designing nuclear power plants- he found a space where innovation met purpose. It was work that reflected not only his training but also his enduring drive to contribute meaningfully.

At the age of 24, Harold met Liga - a woman who would become both partner and companion through life's winding journey. After meeting in 2010, they married soon thereafter. To Harold, Liga was "the best thing that ever happened to him", and together they shared a marriage marked by discovery and devotion. Whether wandering down scenic back roads or sipping coffee at tucked-away bakeries, they explored not just landscapes but each other's inner worlds - building fifteen years of memories that Liga now carries forward.

Harold delighted in road trips and was an avid fan of Formula 1 racing. When time allowed, he enjoyed biking along old rail trails or walking through state and national parks hand in hand with Liga. His intellectual curiosity led him deep into the histories of World War Two and the Cold War eras. He stood firmly as a supporter of Ukraine - an extension of his belief in justice and sovereignty.

Those who worked alongside Harold recall an optimistic spirit paired with quick wit; he always seemed to have a joke ready to lift the room's mood. His presence brought lightness even amid complexity - a quality not easily forgotten.

Yet like many lives lived fully, Harold's path was shaped by both triumphs and trials. He carried difficult memories from his time at Fishburne Military School and experienced challenges in relationship with his parents that left lasting marks on his heart. Over time, he felt the absence of connection from relatives and friends - a silence that echoed more loudly as pressures mounted in both personal life and career. Faced with professional roadblocks and looming threats to job security, Harold remained steadfast - committed to both his work and marriage despite mounting burdens.

On October 23, 2025, amid these struggles, Harold tragically attempted to take his life. He passed away two days later at Duke University Hospital surrounded by care.

A final farewell took place on October 31 at Walkers Funeral Home in Chapel Hill, NC. Liga stood beside him one last time to honor all they shared.

May Harold's soul find peace beyond pain - and may those who knew him remember not only the weight he carried but also the light he gave so freely. Liga and her family in Latvia will always hold him in their hearts with enduring love.
