Hartwell Gary Clarke, II, age 83, passed away peacefully at his home on April 16, 2026. Gary was born on January 14, 1943, in Charlottesville, Virginia, to the late Hartwell Patteson Clarke and Martha Dabney Uedemann Clarke.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife of 59 years, Dorothy Crafton Clarke. He is survived by his younger brother, Samuel (Elisabeth) Clarke; his twin daughters, Dabney (Adam) Kirk and Courtney (Wilson) Hensley; and his cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth Hensley, Samuel Kirk, Ethan Kirk, and Jackson Hensley.
Gary attended Albemarle High School in Charlottesville. After graduating, he joined the United States Air Force in 1962 and was stationed at Seward Air Force Base in Tullahoma, Tennessee. It was there that he met Dorothy on a blind date, and the two were married on July 17, 1964.
Gary and Dorothy made their home in Nolensville, Tennessee, where they shared a loving life together until her passing in 2023. During the last decade of their marriage, Gary was a devoted caregiver as Dorothy battled Alzheimer's disease, demonstrating unwavering love and commitment.
Gary dedicated many years of service to South Central Bell, which later became BellSouth and eventually AT&T, before retiring. His passion for teaching led him back to the company after retirement, where he trained others in telephone pole climbing and defensive driving—roles he greatly enjoyed.
A man of many talents, Gary loved gardening, working outdoors, and music. He was a gifted mechanic who could fix nearly anything. He played the guitar for many years and even taught himself to play the piano later in life.
In April 1978, Gary and Dorothy welcomed their twin daughters, Dabney and Courtney. He was a devoted father who fully supported their interests, especially their musical pursuits. He rarely missed a performance, traveling long distances to watch them play in marching band competitions and concerts, proudly sharing his love of music with them.
That same dedication extended to his grandchildren. Whether at a game or a performance, Gary could always be found nearby with a camera in hand and a smile on his face.
Gary was deeply active in his church and steadfast in his faith. He served as a deacon and was known for his outspoken love of Jesus and scripture. He also enjoyed photographing church events and took pride in being a gentleman, a good neighbor, and a loyal friend.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to his sisters-in-law, Elis Clarke and Josie Jarratt, for their strength and support in his final weeks. They also extend sincere thanks to the VA Hospital in Nashville for their care and for helping bring Gary home, as well as to Alive Hospice for their compassionate support throughout this journey.
Visitation with the family will be held on Monday, April 20, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Woodbine Funeral Home, Hickory Chapel, 5852 Nolensville Road, Nashville, Tennessee 37211. A graveside service will take place on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Nolensville Cemetery, 9888 Clovercroft Road, Nolensville, Tennessee 37135.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a church or charity of your choice that gives back to the community, honoring Gary's generous spirit.
