A memorial service celebrating the life of Helen Marie Bernat, 84, will be held on Saturday, January 31st, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Swan-Law Funeral Home, 501 North Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Helen was born on November 5, 1941, in Shreveport, Louisiana to James J. Lottinger, Sr. and Doris Lottinger and entered into eternal rest on Thursday, December 25, 2025, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Helen graduated from Fair Park High School in 1959, where she met the love of her life, Henry, beginning a partnership that would span a lifetime. She had a deep appreciation for life and carried a grateful heart for every opportunity she was given. As the devout wife of an oilman, Helen embraced a life filled with both adventure and sacrifice, making homes in Scotland, Texas, and Louisiana, while treasuring the many places they experienced together. Wherever Henry's work took him around the world, Helen remained lovingly and faithfully by his side.
A woman of many talents, Helen pursued her passions with courage and determination, from opening a twirling studio to building a successful career in real estate, where her strong work ethic and drive allowed her to thrive. She was deeply loved by all who knew her, and her warm spirit and radiant presence had a way of lighting up every room she entered.
Helen appreciated the finer things in life often in the form of a beautiful bracelet, but nothing compared to the deep and abiding love she had for her children and grandchildren. She was a devoted mother who stood by her children through every circumstance, supporting them with unwavering loyalty and strength. No role brought Helen greater joy than being a grandmother. She cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren and did all she could to remain actively and lovingly involved in their lives.
Helen had a deep love for animals, especially her Yorkshire Terriers, and found great comfort in their companionship. In her final days, she was lovingly accompanied by her cherished Teddy, who remained faithfully by her side.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents and sister; Eva Ruth Fouts.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 60+ years, Henry Bernat; her son, Henry "Buck" Bernat, Jr., her daughter Pamela McReynolds and husband Cole, her grandchildren, Jordan Backofen, Jared Backofen, Morgan Marie Fiss and husband Lawson, Brooklyn Bernat; and her brothers, C. J. Lottinger and wife, Kay and Jimmie Joe Lottinger; along with a host of nieces, nephews and other family members.
The family would like to express special thanks to the many caregivers who have helped care for Helen in the last year.
