Helena A. Friedman, 78, died in Denver on Jan. 11 surrounded by loved ones.
Born in New York to Sol and Mary Friedman in 1947, Helena was raised in the Washington Heights section of New York, on Long Island and in Teaneck, N.J. She was a graduate of Teaneck High School and Ohio University, where she earned a teaching degree. In the 1970s, Helena married and started her family with Jerry Limone Sr. in Ringwood, N.J. They had four children.
Helena taught at Bogota High School and, after earning a master's in school counseling, became a guidance counselor at Bogota, Hawthorne and Ramapo high schools. She was an expert at guiding students and families through the college admissions process and a passionate advocate for education.
Helena was a lifelong learner and voracious reader of literary fiction and nonfiction books about psychology and spirituality. Before moving to Denver, she was an active member of Barnert Temple in Franklin Lakes, N.J., leading the ritual committee and working in adult education.
She enjoyed musical theater, British TV, mysteries, knitting, card games and crossword puzzles, and was a Mahjong champion. She loved good food and cooking for her family. She was a regular food pantry volunteer at Jewish Family Services in Denver.
Helena cherished her children and grandchildren, often traveling to see them and keeping up with their lives by phone and text. She was also a wonderful big sister, remaining close with her brother and sisters across the miles.
Helena is survived by her children Jerry Limone Jr., Jeanine Draut, Joe Limone and Tricia Anstey (Jon Anstey); former husband Jerry Limone Sr.; brother John Friedman (Michelle); sisters Patricia Kavanaugh (Jed) and Maryann Parks (Michael); and grandchildren Gwen, Alex, Francesca, Josie and Ben.
