It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Helmut Karl Hammermeister, 94, who embarked on his final adventure on January 15, 2026, in Wasilla, AK, after a long life rich with love, laughter and the joy of his family.
Born on May 24, 1931, in Hanover, Germany, Helmut had a life full of exploration and adventure. He lived in Canada, where he began his journey with his beautiful wife Helga. He preferred work in remote places including Port Alice, B.C., Adak, Alaska and Kwajalein Island. He spent many years in Southeast Alaska in Thorne Bay, where he and his wife raised their five children and then chose to settle in Anchorage, Alaska. Known for his good sense of humor, and his love for technology, Helmut made significant contributions through his work during the 1976 pipeline rush in Valdez, Alaska where he dedicated many years of hard work and expertise. Helmut was a great outdoorsman who loved fishing the rivers of Alaska. He had a passion for gardening and cultivated beauty and delight to share with friends and neighbors.
Helmut was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Helga and loving daughter Evelyn. He is survived by his children, Diane, Peter, Susan, and David, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. All of whom share a part of his spirit and will miss him deeply. His legacy will be carried on by his family he leaves behind, sharing in his laughter, remembering his tales and his unforgettable impact on their lives.
A service to celebrate Helmut's life will be held in Thorne Bay, AK, August 16, 2026.
His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. Always in our thoughts, forever in our hearts.
