Herbert Johan Becher, 87, of Newtown, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025. Born in Neukirchen, Germany, Herb's life journey carried him across continents and into the hearts of many.
He was predeceased by his parents, Josephine and Karl Becher; his brother, Karl Becher; and his sister, Luise Schuhbauer.
Herb leaves behind his devoted wife, Patricia A. Becher, with whom he shared many happy years filled with travel, laughter, and love. He was a proud father to his daughter, Courtney (Chris) Zatorsky, and his son, Jason (Carlee) Becher, and a deeply loving grandfather to Sam, Ben, Audra, and Teddy, each of whom brought him immense joy. He is also lovingly remembered by his "adopted" extended family, Lisa (Oscar) Contreras and Matthew and Katelyn Contreras. Mark (Elizabeth) Ladrow.
An accomplished engineer, Herb spent his career at Risdon Corporation before retiring and embracing his many passions. He was an avid marathon runner, competing in marathons throughout Germany as well as the Boston Marathon, Washington, D.C., Connecticut, and New York City Marathon. His dedication, discipline, and love of running reflected the determination with which he approached life.
In retirement, Herb also discovered a love for watercolor painting. His artwork is proudly displayed in homes across the United States, a lasting reflection of his creativity and appreciation for beauty. He was an active member of The Hobbyist Men's Club in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where he enjoyed golfing, was a proud member of the bowling league, and participated in the hiking club, forming lasting friendships along the way.
A wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Herb cherished time spent with family, vacationing with Pat, and cooking memorable meals that brought everyone together. His warmth, kindness, quiet humor, and zest for life will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
