Hewitt B. McCloskey Jr.

1939 - 2026

Hewitt B. McCloskey, Jr., age 87, of Fort Myers, FL, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026, surrounded by family and friends. He was born February 27, 1939, in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Hewitt Sr. and Julia (Morgan) McCloskey.

He is survived and loved by his wife, Connie Hope; his sons, Jonathan McCloskey and Scott McCloskey; his daughter, Nancy O’Connell; six grandchildren (Riley, Christopher, Lainey, Anna, Jon, and Lily); and his sister, Margaret (Peg) Coe.

Hewitt graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture and from the University of Pennsylvania with a master’s degree in landscape architecture. Always a hard worker, he spent 27 years running McCloskey & Faber, PC, a landscape architecture firm he founded in 1980 with his longtime friend and partner, Jim Faber. They ran the firm together until his retirement in 2007. He was proud of their many notable design projects, including the Trump Taj Mahal and Trump Plaza hotels and casinos; The Plaza at King of Prussia and Willow Grove Park Mall; and corporate campuses for Merck & Co., Inc., in West Point, PA, and McNeil Consumer Products Co. in Fort Washington, PA.

Throughout his life, Hewitt was an avid gardener and a dedicated collector of fine items, including art, coins, stamps, and jewelry. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and cheering for (and occasionally yelling at) the Eagles and the Phillies. He spent many days enjoying the beaches and waters of Ocean City, NJ, and Fort Myers, FL, where he lived in retirement for the past 20 years. Images of him on St. Charles Place beach in Ocean City, with a Phillies game on the radio and waves and seagulls in the background, are seared in our memories.

Above all, he was a social character who loved spending time with friends and family. Known for his sharp sense of humor, he was the life of the party and the “fun uncle” to his many nieces and nephews. His playful sayings and quick wit brought laughter to those around him, and he will be profoundly missed.
