Hugh Franklin Howard

Hugh Franklin Howard, 90, peacefully passed away in his sleep on December 26, 2025. Born on September 23, 1935, Hugh lived a long and full life defined by hard work, resilience, a love of the water, and a deep devotion to his family. Hugh proudly served his country in the United States Army, a chapter of his life that built strength and discipline. After his service, he was a welder and he dedicated much of his life to making fish nets—a trade that became not just his occupation, but a reflection of his steady hands and patient nature.
Hugh spent countless hours on the sound with his dear friend Bobby, setting nets for spots and later cleaning and frying their catch on the hill.
He is survived by his loving daughter Frankie Howard; his sister Diana Askins (David); his brother Donald; grandchildren Cheryl Edwards (Steve) and Danielle Watkins, Kendall Hickman(Tianna) and Alex Hickman; and great-grandchildren Nathan, Nevaeh, Jasmyne, Brianna, Cameron, Austin and the newest -Kash. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and extended family who adored him.
Hugh was preceded in death by his mother and father Lena Mae Howard and Alexander Nixon Howard, beloved wife, Claudia Howard; his daughters, Sandi Register Howard and Connie Howard Hickman; his sisters, Cleo and Julia; his brothers, Nick, Lawrence, and Bill; and relatives Darryl, Doris, and Margie, who were raised as siblings.
Those who knew Hugh will remember his tough exterior that hid a warm heart and deep love for his family. One of his favorite pastimes, even as his health declined, was teasing his daughter Frankie and finding ways to get a rise out of her—a small gesture that perfectly captured his playful spirit that few got to see.
Hugh's strength, wit, and love will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His memory will live on through every shared story, cast net, and every sunset over the sound.
