Hurbert G. Harris, "The Senator", a man who never met a stranger, a free drink he wouldn't accept, or a competition he didn't believe he could win, officially wrapped up his earthly adventures on December 7, 2025. Finding things down here a bit repetitive—and heaven in need of better snacks, louder televisions, and improved meat-smoking techniques—he decided it was time to take his talents upstairs.

Born August 15, 1948, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Floyd and Atherlean Harris, he was the second-born child and wasted no time establishing himself as both memorable and mischievous. Raised in Minden and a proud graduate of Princeton High School, he carried his Louisiana roots with him everywhere.

A man of many talents and even more opinions, he served two tours in the U.S. Army during Vietnam, holding titles that included Ranger, Postman, Chef, and Recruiter—sometimes all in the same conversation. After military service, he retired from a long career at Chevron as a chemical operator and promptly reinvented himself again, this time as an IT Specialist with the Veterans Administration, proving once and for all that he could do just about anything he set his mind to.

Formally trained at Le Cordon Bleu, his favorite foods remained cookies, candy, and on rare and questionable occasions—roadkill. He was known for smoking meats using an amount of hickory wood best described as "aggressive," while watching television at a volume detectable several zip codes away. His favorite sports team was whichever one happened to be winning him money that week, and his favorite sport was, naturally, the same.

Well traveled and endlessly observant, he could recount the cities he visited with great accuracy—particularly those that smelled bad. He was a lover of adventure, mischief, game rooms, westerns, naps, foul jokes, and good times. A practical joker, smooth talker, and loyal friend, he offered wise counsel whether requested or not.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Atherlean Harris, and his older sister, Shirley Dillard.

He is survived by his loving wife, Arnita; daughter, Tonia; grandchildren Evan and Teagan; stepdaughter Telfia Shelton; grandsons Spencer, Cameron, and Sterling; sisters Frances Williams and Regina Wall; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and acquaintances who likely still owe him a drink (or money).

A true jack of all trades and undeniably the most interesting man in the room, he lived life entirely on his own terms, with determination, charm, and a spirit that refused to be tamed. He will be missed deeply, laughed about often, and remembered always.
