Ildiko Kunos

Dr. Ildiko Kunos (neé Vermes), pediatrician, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend to many passed away at her home on February 18, 2026, at the age of 84.

Born and raised in Budapest, Hungary, she graduated summa cum laude with an MD from Semmelweis Medical University, where she also met her husband and lifelong partner, Dr. George Kunos. Together, they moved to Montreal, Canada, and later to the Washington area. As a specialist in neonatology, Ildiko dedicated her professional life to caring for her tiny, prematurely born patients in the NICU. She served as a faculty member first at McGill University, then at Children's Hospital of Washington followed by Georgetown University from where she retired in 2014.

Ildiko is survived by her adoring husband of 58 years, loving daughters Annamaria Kunos and Doreen Maahs, son-in-law Gordon Maahs, sisters Aniko Szaday and Kati Weth, and grandchildren Lola Kunos-Martynov, Maxwell and Gideon Maahs to whom she was their beloved "Grandma Ildi". She was the pillar of her family, having great inner strength, sound judgment and generosity of spirit. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her, including friends, colleagues and countless former patients and their families.

A memorial service will be held at a date yet to be determined in Spring, 2026, at the Renwick Chapel of Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, D.C.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in memory of Dr. Ildiko Kunos to the American Cancer Society or Montgomery Hospice.
