Jack Rodger Barnett of Candler, NC died on November 21, 2025, after a four-year struggle with kidney cancer. He was 81 years old.
He was born in Jefferson City, NC on March 6, 1944, to Ralph Maxwell Barnett and Naomi Grant Barnett. The family moved to Enka-Candler for work when he was 10 months old. Jack graduated from Enka High School before joining the US Army, serving 3 years in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War.
In 1967, Jack married Elaine Willis, and together they had a daughter, Jeanna. Jack spent the rest of his life providing for his family.
A skilled welder, Jack worked at American Enka for several years before going to work at Carolina Power & Light in 1982. He retired from what was then called Progress Energy in 2005.
Jack was a Freemason for 33 years, having joined in 1992. He was Master of West Asheville Lodge 665 in 1999 and served as Lodge Secretary for 25 years. He was a charter member of Veritas Lodge and also served as secretary there for 5 years. Jack was District Deputy Grand Master from 2015 to 2018 and was a member of the Grand Lodge Technology Committee. Having joined the Scottish Rite in 1993, he was honored with the 33° in 2021.
Jack was a man of faith, a Christian whose life demonstrated the message of Micah 6:8. "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his sisters Helen Slocomb and Bobbie Griffin, an infant brother Jerman McKinnish Jr., and two nephews, Max Queen and Ronnie Weatherman.
Jack is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elaine, his daughter and son-in-law Jeanna Barnett and Thomas Reese, grandson Wesley Logan and his wife Kelly, and great-grandsons Brody Logan, Noah Montcastle, and Walker Logan. He is also survived by his niece Pam Widar, nephews Randy Queen, Kenneth, Weatherman, and Terry Weatherman, sisters-in-law Gloria Crayton (Jim), Deborah Harbin (Doug), and Dawn Bergstrom (Rick), and brothers-in-law Johnny Willis (Joan), Michael Willis, Randy Willis (Margie), and Phillip Willis.
Jack requested that no funeral or graveside services be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford, NC.
