Jacqueline A. James, aged 94, passed away peacefully at home on January 24, 2026, in San Mateo, CA surrounded by loved ones.

Born to Charles and Lucy Anthony December 11, 1931 she was raised in San Francisco along with her beloved sister and best friend Beverly. Jacqueline, affectionately known as Jackie, dedicated her life to education, community service, and the pursuit of knowledge and adventure.

Jackie's academic journey began at Sloan Elementary School and Lincoln High School in San Francisco. She continued her education at Stanford University and graduated in 1953. Her passion for history and education led her to a fulfilling career as a History and Social Studies teacher at Hayward High School until she retired after 35 years. Jackie was not only a teacher but also a mentor, and counselor greatly respected by her students, many of whom maintained contact with her throughout her life.

Beyond her professional life, Jackie was a loving , mom, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She is survived by her daughter Connie Dorland, son-in-law Barry Dorland, grandchildren Katie and Gerritt Dorland, nieces Kathy Prost, Sue Powell, Nancy Murr, and nephew Steve Murr. She was preceded in death by her son, Mark James, who passed away just months before her and her adored sister Beverly who passed in 2016.

Jackie's interests and hobbies painted the picture of a vibrant, active individual well into her later years. A champion tennis player until the age of 88, Jackie was also an avid gardener, cymbidium enthusiast, exceptional bridge player and voracious reader with a particular interest in history. She was an inspiration to many. Jackie was a lifelong member of many book clubs and tennis clubs, she enjoyed hiking, and had an insatiable curiosity about the world and traveled extensively. Jackie was also a dedicated fan of Stanford sports. She rarely missed watching a game on TV. Jackie's community spirit shone through her volunteer work with many organizations such as: The League of Women Voters, San Mateo History Museum, AAUW and The Filoli Estates. She also held presidential roles in several tennis clubs and was a YMCA member for over 45 years.

A celebration of Jackie's life will be held in the near future. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to the League of Women Voters, AAUW, Sierra Club, Stanford University, Nature Conservancy, or Doctors Without Borders, reflecting her lifelong commitment to education, nature, and global awareness. Jackie's legacy of passion, dedication, and service leaves an indelible mark on her community and all who knew her.

One more thing about Jackie...She never went anywhere without her signature red lipstick on!!
