Jacquelyn L. Hicks passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025. She was the first of twelve children born to Walter and Cordelia Harris Martin.

Jacquelyn attended Toledo Public Schools and graduated from Scott High School in 1958. After graduation, she was employed at DeVeaux Appliance and Repair, where she worked until moving to St. Paul, Minnesota. There, she enjoyed a long and fulfilling career working for the Minnesota government, a job she truly loved because it allowed her to help others and give back to those in need.

While living in Minnesota, Jacquelyn helped found The Progressive Baptist Church and was a very active member. The church became her second home, where she found love, peace, and comfort.

Seven years ago, Jacquelyn moved to New Jersey to be with her son and his family. She developed a special interest in their dance studios, where she never wanted to miss a dance event. She spent countless hours watching the dancers perform, always enjoying the opportunity to offer encouragement and thoughtful feedback. She was affectionately known as “Grandma Jackie” by the dancers and their families.

Jacquelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Cordelia Martin; her sisters, Pamela Renee Nutt, Marion Lynn Smith, and Nancy Opal Martin; and her brothers, Lawrence Keith, Charles Richard, Leslie Dean, Anthony Wayne, and Kevin Walter.

She is survived by her son, Vincent (Kelley); grandchildren, Lacey (Freddie), Luke, and Kendra; great-granddaughter, Penelope; her sister, Patricia Kaye Ross; brothers, Don (Marsine) and Herb (Linder); and countless nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Jacquelyn’s life is a testament to the love she shared and the many people she touched. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A memorial service will be held at The Progressive Baptist Church 1505 Burns Ave, Saint Paul MN on December 30th at 12:00 p.m., followed by a luncheon.
The funeral service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery 1502 West Central Ave, Toledo, OH May 9th at 11am.
