Jamal Umar Nelums Sr. departed this life on October 13, 2024, at the age of 39. Born on July 28, 1985, Jamal was a loving son, devoted husband, and proud father whose life was filled with passion for family, music, and creativity.
Jamal was the cherished son of Darlene Easley-Nelums and Edward Nelums. He was welcomed into the world by his grandparents, Doris Easley and Deacon James Porter. He grew up in a large family, surrounded by a host of cousins, as well as aunts and uncles: Keith D. Porter, Glenn M. Easley, Jacquelan K. (Rudy) Staples, Aquanetta L. (Jeffery) Lathon, Gwendolyn Beach, Anthony Beach, Jennifer Jones, Ruby Worthy, Special aunt Juanita Hollis, cousin, Delano Dancy, Jasmine Parker and Dorian Barnet ("Evelyn") were a constant source of support.
Married to his beloved wife, Nicole, Jamal was a proud father to four wonderful children: Jamal Jr., Kyla, Benjamin, and Oriana; grandson, Zymir. Family was the heart of Jamal's life, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
Jamal is survived by his many siblings, including his sisters Shownquell Nelums, LaDonna Moody (Ryan), Synebia Jones, and Lynnell Jefferson (James), as well as brothers Damien Nelums, Edward B. Jones and Marlon Stubbs-Brown. He was a loving uncle to numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom will carry his spirit forward.
A passionate musician, Jamal pursued his love for music by studying music engineering at Ursula Caulfield Music School. He thrived in expressing his creativity through writing and recording music, rapping, and creating beats. Known by his stage names JNelz or LeoMosity, his artistic pursuits resonated deeply with those around him. In addition to his musical endeavors, Jamal enjoyed cooking on the grill, often bringing family and friends together for delightful meals. He had a wide-ranging taste in movies, enjoying everything from thrilling horrors to lighthearted comedies. Growing up, he loved watching anything featuring Bruce Lee and was an enthusiastic fan of Michael Jackson, often showcasing his dance moves that mirrored the King of Pop's iconic style.
Jamal worked as a courier for Mercy, a job he embraced with enthusiasm and pride. His colleagues admired his work ethic and the kindness he extended to everyone he met, reflecting his genuine care for others. Jamal Umar Nelums Sr.'s vibrant spirit, infectious laughter, and unwavering love for family will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, creativity, and joy that will continue to inspire those he touched throughout his life.
