James Phillip Bernhard

1951 - 2026

James Phillip Bernhard was born on February 11, 1951, in Hollywood, California. It
is with a heavy heart we announce James passed away on March 5, 2026, at St. Luke's South in Overland Park.

As a child he lived in National City, California with his mother and siblings until he
met his wife, Marie King-Bernhard in 1971. They were married in Sheridan, Montana on September 30, 1972.

They moved back to San Diego, California where James completed a trade school
for fire sprinkler design, eventually becoming a highly accomplished NICET level 4 designer. In his career, he designed many buildings that he was proud and challenged by including Union Station and the St. Louis Arch. He always found his work challenging, rewarding, and it supported him in raising his family. His son Jeremiah was born in June 1979, and his daughter Abigail was born in February 1983. Their family moved to Overland Park later in 1993.

James loved learning about Kansas history, architecture, and exploring all the parks in Johnson County. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, and flying kites. He always loved talking to new people and hearing their stories. Later in life he spent his days painting, gardening, playing poker with friends, and baking for his friends and family on special occasions.

During his life James was very committed to helping others. He and his wife actively led many Tough Love groups throughout the Kansas City metro area, teaching parenting skills and supporting parents through difficult times. He was always available to anyone needing help or support.

He will be remembered for his kindness and quick wit. He loved a good "Dad joke"
and loved to laugh. He will be deeply missed by his family and loved ones.

A service celebrating his life will take place on March 21, 2026, at Church of the
Resurrection on 95th and Antioch at 2:00 PM and a reception following the service will be at Aspen Ridge Apartments at 11691 S Ridgeview Road. Olathe Kansas 66061.
