James "Jim" Richard Blakley, 73
Jim was born on 3-2-1952 to Robert and Marjorie Blakley. He passed away in his home on January 7, 2026.
As a youth, Jim especially enjoyed trapping fur bearers, which became a lifelong hobby. He graduated from John Marshall High School and received a bachelor's degree from University of Minnesota, Duluth, where he reportedly spent much of his time rock climbing. In fact, he is considered something of a rock climbing pioneer in Minnesota, having discovered and named a number of routes in Blue Mounds, the North Shore, and Barn Bluff. He founded the Zumbro River Alpine Club, ZRAC, a group of Rochester area climbers. Jim traveled far and wide on rock climbing adventures, which he supported as a self-employed cabinet maker, designing and executing beautiful and complicated projects for homes and yachts, and designed and built several distinctive homes.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth "Liz" (Tim) Ritt, special friend, Pam Brogan, brother, Robert "Bob" (Lucy) Blakley, sister, Peggy Blakley, a niece, five nephews, and his life-long best friend, Tom Larson. He was proceeded in death by his parents, his sister, Susie Myers, and many beloved dogs.
Jim always loved a good pot-luck! Therefore a pot-luck celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026 starting at noon at the Pavilion in Trailhead Park, 101 E. Center ST, Pine Island. Bring a dish to pass and photos and memories to share.
