James Cross Culpepper, 84, of Torrington, CT, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. Jim was born in Plainfield, NJ, and spent his early years in Island Heights and Toms River, NJ. He was a graduate of Peekskill Military Academy in Peekskill, NY, where he enjoyed and excelled in athletics. Jim retired from IBM Headquarters in Armonk, NY after 35 years of service, having built a fulfilling career in sales before retiring in the early 2010s.
In retirement, Jim found joy in dining out, golfing, reading, and spending time with family. He loved the color green and was a devoted fan of UConn Women's Basketball. Jim always had a way of being the most optimistic person in the room, and that spirit shined through everything he did. He was often described as a ray of sunshine and the life of the party.
Jim is survived by his brother, Bill Heins of Fort Wayne, Indiana; his sister, Katie Nilsen of Marana, Arizona; and his daughters: Kelly Culpepper of Norwood, MA; Sherri Anton of Honey Brook, PA; Sandra Felano of Benson, NC; Morgan Culpepper and her husband, (Dave MacLeod), of Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Madison Culpepper and her fiancé, Jared Fuoco, of Torrington, CT. He is also remembered by his former spouse and caretaker, Aileen Culpepper of Farmington, CT, as well as his nephew, Will Boylan of Newtown, CT. Jim leaves behind two grandsons, one granddaughter, and two great-grandsons.
A Celebration of life will take place at a later date to be advised!
