Retired Navy Captain James E. Johnson, 91, passed away peacefully comforted by the presence of his loved ones on February 26, 2026, in Annapolis, Maryland.
Born August 12, 1934, in Boulder, Colorado, and raised alongside the cornfields of Carrollton, Illinois, Jim grew up with strong Midwestern values that stayed with him throughout his life. He was a man of accomplishment, integrity, and quiet determination.
One of the great honors of Jim’s life was attending the United States Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1956. His long and distinguished military career included service during the Vietnam War. Over the years he held a variety of important roles, including commanding the submarine IREX (SS-482), Wichita (AOR-1) and Pawcatuck (AO-108), as well as ship acquisition while at the Pentagon. He received numerous honors, including the Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Expert Pistol Medal and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. His dedication to service and leadership defined his time in the Navy until his retirement in 1980.
Never one to slow down, Jim embarked on a second career at the age of 45. He returned to school, earned his certification as a CPA, and opened his own accounting practice. During his years as an accountant, he also shared his knowledge as a teacher, helping guide and mentor the next generation of accountants.
Jim and his first wife, June Johnson (née Whitehurst), raised two sons, Ned and David, who were a central source of pride in his life.
Later in life, Jim met and married Patricia Carmody Johnson. Together they thrived while living in Annapolis as they shared many interests and adventures, including sailing, attending the symphony, and enjoying evenings dining out. Even in retirement, Jim’s love for the Navy remained strong. As dedicated season ticket holders, he and Patricia attended many Navy football games and remained deeply connected to the Naval Academy community.
Jim was an adventurous spirit who loved to travel. Throughout his life he explored many places with family and friends, including river cruises along the Rhine River, visits to Mexico, Paris and many memorable experiences closer to home.
Jim was an exceptionally kind and thoughtful man. He had a gentle sense of humor, an optimistic outlook on life, and a warm, pleasant nature that made him a joy to be around. He treasured time with family and friends and was always looking forward to the next opportunity to gather, share stories, and enjoy life together.
Jim is survived by his wife, Patricia Carmody Johnson; his son, David Johnson; his stepdaughter, Sharon Brach (Stanley); and his stepson, Brian Carmody. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Ned Johnson, and by his first wife, June Johnson (née Whitehurst).
Jim will be remembered for his service, his intellect, his adventurous spirit, and most of all for the quiet kindness that touched the lives of those who knew him.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service Thursday April 9, 2026 at 10:30am at St. Mary’s, 109 Duke of Gloucester St, Annapolis, MD 21401. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will take place privately at a later date.
