James Erthein, 97, passed away on November 8, 2025, in West Sandgate, Vermont. A man of remarkable intellect, resilience, and wit, James led a life defined by service, enterprise, and a deep appreciation for the world around him.
Born on May 11, 1928, in Long Beach, New York, James was the son of David and Julie Erthein. He graduated from Long Beach High School in 1945 before pursuing higher education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948. He continued his academic journey with graduate studies at Columbia University from 1948 to 1950.
James served his country with distinction in the United States Navy, ultimately retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. His military career reflected his steadfast dedication and leadership.
Following his service, James brought his talents to the business world. He ran the National Hangar Company—recognized as the only remaining U.S.-based manufacturer of clothing hangers and other store supplies. Under his guidance, the company stood as a testament to American manufacturing and ingenuity.
In addition to his business acumen, James ventured into hospitality with creativity and flair. From 1977 to 1981, he operated Nine Doors Restaurant in Port Jefferson on Long Island. The restaurant was known for its unique charm and culinary excellence—a reflection of James's own passion for cooking.
James was a man who read widely and traveled extensively. His curiosity about the world was matched by a sharp sense of humor that endeared him to those around him. Whether preparing a gourmet meal or engaging in spirited conversation, he brought warmth and intelligence to every endeavor.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife Marcella Erthein; his son John Erthein and three grandchildren; stepson Kevin Johnson and his wife Linda and three grandchildren; stepdaughter Leyli Johnson; stepson Leif Johnson; brother Marc Erthein and Marc's wife Linda; nephew Eric Erthein; and niece Gabriella Erthein.
James was predeceased by his parents David and Julie Erthein; his former wife Barbara Erthein; and two infant sons, Craig and Matthew Erthein.
