Obituary for James Reid Gilmour II
James Reid Gilmour II ("Jim"), born November 11, 1950, in Pennsylvania, passed away February 1, 2026, in Harlingen, Texas. He leaves a legacy of service, faith, dedication, and deep love for his family.
Jim served honorably in the United States Army for 20 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant. A Special Forces Airborne Ranger with two tours in Vietnam, he later devoted much of his career to reenlistment counseling, mentoring soldiers with integrity, compassion, and steady leadership. He also earned master's degrees in Psychology and Business Management.
Following military retirement, Jim spent 25 years with Marriott/Sodexho, continuing his commitment to service and forming lasting friendships through his leadership and kindness.
Jim and his wife of 53 years, Faith Hope Gilmour (née Martin), lived in several states and Germany before settling in South Texas. In Harlingen, they were active members of First Baptist Church, where Jim enjoyed singing, teaching Sunday School, and serving his community.
He is survived by his wife Faith; children Kandy Lou Porter, James Reid Gilmour III, Kathryn Hope Mathews, and Elizabeth Sarah Gilmour; seven grandchildren; and siblings Donna Wrightson, Elizabeth Breen, Marion Woltman, and Thomas Gilmour. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Alice Gilmour, and brothers William, Robert, and John Gilmour.
In retirement, Jim found joy in simple routines — feeding birds, whistling ducks, and helping a friend tend cattle — moments that reflected his gentle spirit.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested toward a flagpole memorial in his honor.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 14, 2026, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Harlingen.
May he rest in peace and remain a blessing in the memories of those who loved him.
