A proud veteran, James served his country with distinction as a member of the 173rd Army Airborne during the Vietnam War. His bravery was honored with an honorable discharge and the awarding of the Bronze Star—a lasting tribute to his courage and dedication.
For the past 21 years, James shared his life with his beloved wife, Carol Pavao Hodge. Together they created a home filled with love and companionship. He was a devoted father to his daughters: Carol Hodge Langstroth and her partner Kristen Tubb of New Mexico, and Sara Messina Cherry and her husband Paul. His circle of care extended to his goddaughter Jessica Currin and longtime friend Lisa Currin.
James is also fondly remembered by his brother John Johnson and wife Margo of Dublin, California; his sister Kathleen Johnson Hodge of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who were touched by his warmth. He was predeceased by his father Pierce "Jim" Hodge in 2000; mother Muriel Hodge in 2005; and sister Marian Kohler of Lancaster, California.
Those who knew James recall a man whose kindness and generous spirit brought comfort and joy to others. His memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
