James Hughes

1937 - 2025

James L. Hughes, affectionately known as Jim or "Huggs," passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025, at his home in Orange City, Florida. He was 88 years old.

Born on July 4, 1937, in Birmingham, Alabama, Jim pursued a lifelong passion for aviation and service. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Auburn University in 1959 and entered the United States Marine Corps that same year through Aviation Officer Candidate School. After completing Naval Flight School in 1961 with both fixed-wing and helicopter ratings, he began a distinguished military career.

From 1961 to 1963, Jim piloted H-34 helicopters in North Carolina, Thailand, and Vietnam. He then served as a flight instructor in T-28s and C-45s within the Naval Training Command until 1966. Returning to Vietnam from 1966 to 1968 as a CH-46 helicopter pilot, he was shot down twice and sustained minor injuries. In 1968, he transitioned to Marine fighter aircraft, flying A-4s and F-4s ashore and aboard Navy carriers. His final Vietnam deployment occurred between 1972 and 1973.

Jim retired from the Marine Corps in 1979 after twenty years of honorable service, concluding his military career as a Marine Advisor to the Federal Aviation Administration.

In civilian life, Jim continued his aviation journey with distinction. He served as Chief Pilot for corporate operations across various industries and held roles including Corporate Helicopter Pilot, Flight Test Pilot, and Military Aviation Maintenance Manager overseeing over 3,000 aircraft. He retired from active flying at age 81 with more than 33,000 hours logged—without a single accident—and received the Wright Brothers Award.

Jim is survived by his wife of 28 years, Wendy; children Andrew Hughes, Kelly Voboril, and Courtney Jonda; grandchildren Nathan Voboril, Alex Voboril, Lorea Kaiser, Mya Jonda, and Elizabeth Jonda; and great-grandchildren Harper Kaiser, Hazel Kaiser, and Hadlyn Kaiser.

Throughout his life-whether soaring above oceans or guiding others from the ground-Jim exemplified dedication, resilience, and unwavering passion for flight. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to all who follow in his path.
