Send Flowers
Jim Jackson’s body reached its “capacity” January 14, 2026, after 98 years of service. James William Jackson, with great readiness, passed away at home. His last few weeks were a celebration of friends who kindly dropped by for a visit. He considered them the most wonderful people in the world.

Dictated to his granddaughter years ago, his self-written obituary follows:

"James W. Jackson Sr., Christian, preceded in death twelve years by his spouse, Lucy Carolyn Spain Jackson, love personified. Lifetime associate of W.L. Petrey Company. Layman architect and woodsman.

A few lines of poetry by Sidney Lanier, in advice to the quick: “…fly in the greatness of God as the marsh-hen flies, In the freedom that fills all the space ’twixt the marsh and the skies: By so many roots the marsh grass sends in the sod, I will heartily lay me ahold on the greatness of God.”"

Jim was born in Petrey, Alabama, November 13, 1927, to Myra Petrey and Sidney Warren Jackson. His family also included his loving brother Sidney Warren Jackson, Jr., (Jack) and sister Betty Jackson Gibson.

He attended Petrey School through ninth grade and graduated from Luverne High School. Jim later attended The University of Alabama where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi and earned a degree in Commerce. He served in the United States Army.

In 1950, Jim married Lucy Carolyn Spain of Tuscaloosa, and together they made Crenshaw County their lifelong home.

Jim is survived by his children: Robert Warren Jackson (Phyllis), James William Jackson Jr. “Bill” (Lucy), and Virginia Jackson Jones (George); grandchildren Will (Maryanna), Elinor (Jack), Frances, Jackson (Katarina), Lillian (Peyton), Todd (Megan), and Judd (Kim); and thirteen great-grandchildren.

His life was well lived and using a phrase he cited often “in good order.”

We will miss him greatly.

There will be a memorial service Sunday, January 18th, at 2 o’clock at Luverne United Methodist Church with visitation afterwards at the church.

Those wishing to honor Jim's memory may do so by making a donation to First United Methodist Church of Luverne, in place of sending flowers.
