James Roland Johnson, lovingly known as Jim or JJ, 78, passed away peacefully at his home in Lake City, Florida, on January 3, 2026, of natural causes.
Jim was born in Anniston, Alabama, and at just 17 years old proudly joined the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He served honorably with the 101st Airborne Division — the Screaming Eagles. During his service, Jim was awarded the Purple Heart, a testament to his courage and sacrifice. Jim was also a Mason and quietly gave to many charities over the years, always believing in helping others whenever he could.
Following his military service, Jim spent much of his working life in construction management, primarily in the Tampa Bay area. Known for his strong work ethic, practical skills, and generous nature, he never hesitated to lend a hand or share his knowledge.
Jim had a deep love for the outdoors and nature, especially hunting and fishing, and he took great pride in passing that love on to his children. He was famous for giving the very best pep talks — the kind that left you feeling stronger, braver, and more capable than you were before. He was the person you called when life felt heavy, always ready to listen, offer encouragement, and remind you to pray and trust that God was at work. Jim found great joy in sharing his love for the Lord, often sharing favorite scriptures and celebrating the miracles within his family. He lived his faith openly and generously.
Authentically and unapologetically himself, Jim was known for his unforgettable dance moves, his smooth, deep singing voice (often featuring "Under the Boardwalk" or his own creative version of "I Am So Beautiful — to me"), his ever-ready dad jokes, and his competitive spirit. He excelled at bowling, pool, darts, and softball, and was naturally athletic. In the kitchen, Jim was a great cook who never wanted anyone to leave hungry. He especially loved making venison, ribs, and his famous sausage gravy.
Jim also had a lifelong love of animals, especially dogs. He is survived by his dog, Bandit, who brought him endless comfort and companionship. A big football fan, Jim loved all the Florida teams — especially the Florida Gators, despite his family's ongoing (and good-natured) objections.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Temple Taul; his brothers, Gordon S. Johnson, Carl Johnson, Jr., and Robert (Bob) N. Johnson; and his sisters, Vicki Prowant and Carolyn Johnson.
He is survived by his dear brother Jerry Johnson; his three children, Christopher James Johnson of Clearwater, Amy Vanderlaan (Eric) of Palm Harbor, and Caitlin LaFera (Seth) of Neptune Beach; his three beloved grandchildren, Amber Johnson, Aurora Vanderlaan, and Ellie LaFera; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jim will be remembered as a devoted son, loving father and grandfather, veteran, a man of faith, and a friend whose warmth, humor, and presence will be deeply missed.
Until we see you again — "we love you bunches."
The family thanks you for your love and support and invites you to share this memorial with anyone who was touched by Jim's life. Please feel free to share a favorite memory or photo.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you spend time with those you love — share a good meal, exchange big hugs, and enjoy each other's company. That's exactly how JJ would have wanted it.
