James LaFollette

1936 - 2026

James Milton "Jim" LaFollette, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Born on November 17, 1936, in Terre Haute, Indiana, Jim lived a remarkable life of service, dedication, and love.

Jim graduated from Garfield High School in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1955 before earning his Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana State University in 1959. He later pursued further education at Central Michigan University, where he obtained a Master of Arts degree in 1980. His commitment to learning and personal growth was evident throughout his life.

Following his graduation from Indiana State University, Jim embarked on a distinguished 34-year career with the U.S. Department of Defense. Beginning in 1959 and culminating with his retirement in 1993, Jim rose to the highest level of service within the Civil Service. His career took him and his family across the country as they moved from Port Clinton, Ohio; Illinois; Chambersburg, Pennsylvania twice; Sierra Vista, Arizona; Chester, Virginia; and finally to Cameron Station in Alexandria, Virginia. Each move marked another step forward in Jim's professional journey and reflected his unwavering dedication to his work.

After retiring from government service in 1993, Jim and his beloved wife Ginny settled into retirement at Savannah Lakes in South Carolina. However, Jim's passion for contributing did not wane—at age 65 in 2001, he returned to work as a contractor for the government at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station in North Carolina until 2004. Drawn to the area's charm and community spirit, Jim and Ginny relocated to New Bern, North Carolina, where they enjoyed their retirement years together. In 2020, they made their final move back to Chester, Virginia, to be closer to their family.

Jim proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy Reserve from 1955 to 1963. His sense of duty extended beyond his military service into every aspect of his life.

Family was central to Jim's world. He met the love of his life, Virginia "Ginny," at Erie Army Depot in Port Clinton, Ohio. The two were married for an incredible 63 years—a testament to their enduring bond and shared journey through life. Together they raised two daughters: Michele Parsons (who preceded him in death) and Kathy Browning (Frank). Jim was also a proud grandfather to Shawn (Melissa), Kelley (Jimmy), Stephanie (Chase), and Erika; great-grandfather to Gunnar, Justin, Christopher, Peyton, Daniel, Brenden, Jameson, Kaylee, and Kynzie; and great-great-grandfather to Kai.

Jim is survived by his wife Ginny; sister Suzanne Long; daughter Kathy Browning (Frank); grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great-grandson; as well as numerous extended family members who will cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by his parents Milton and Edna LaFollette; sisters Betty Kline and Mildred Wills; daughter Michele Parsons; and other loved ones who undoubtedly welcomed him home with open arms.

Jim's life was enriched by hobbies such as traveling with Ginny, golfing, reading, wine appreciation, and building computers—a skill he used to support their church community. A man of faith who joined the Lutheran Church after marrying Ginny, he left an enduring legacy of love and commitment.

May James Milton "Jim" LaFollette rest eternal peace comfort hearts all knew loved dearly!
