James "Jim" Mattingly, Sr, beloved husband, father, and Grampy, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026, at the age of 83.
Born on October 1, 1942, Jim lived a full and vibrant life marked by hard work, humor, and deep devotion to his family. He married the love of his life, Sharon, in 1976, and together they built nearly 50 years of partnership, laughter, and unwavering support. In 1979, they welcomed their son, Jim Jr., who would carry forward his father's name and many of his best qualities.
Jim enjoyed a distinguished career in conveyors and material handling, first at Logan Co and then Interlake, where his innovative thinking led to numerous patents and the respect of colleagues across his field. He retired at the age of 58, leaving behind a legacy of ingenuity and dedication.
Outside of work, Jim embraced life with enthusiasm and a sense of fun that was unmistakably his own. He loved dining out—especially long lunches with his brother and dinners shared with family. An avid traveler, he particularly enjoyed cruising and time at the beach or in the pool. Over the years, Jim could often be found at the bowling alley, cheering on his beloved Louisville Cardinals, watching NASCAR, or sitting at a poker table. He took special pride in his convertible BMW—fondly known as "Boppy's Beemer"—and in his younger years, he was an accomplished drag racer, setting national records and earning two prestigious "Wally's."
Jim will be remembered for his quick wit, sincere smile, and the easy way he connected with others. He had a gift for humor, a knack for collecting nicknames, and a presence that made people feel welcome. Above all, he was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving Grampy. A celebration of life with be held for friends and family on Sunday, April 26th at the family home (call for details).
He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Sharon; his son, Jim Jr. (Renee); and his cherished grandchildren, Justine and Owen, his greatest joys. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and Tom Mattingly, and his brother, Tommy.
Jim loved and was deeply loved by many. His smile and ready jokes were well known. His memory and the mark he left on all of us will long be in our hearts.
Save us a seat, Big Guy.
