James “Pat” McCarthy

James “Pat” McCarthy, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and faithful servant of God, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Pat was born in 1947 in Bakersfield, California to Dr. John J. McCarthy and Georgia Dworak McCarthy, both originally from Nebraska, who preceded him in death.
Pat attended Creighton University, where he met the love of his life, Elaine Becker. The two were married and shared 57 years of devoted and joyful marriage. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and community.
Pat and Elaine settled in Oroville, California, where he dedicated his professional life to serving others as a pharmacist. He worked for Longs Drugstore, where he became Pharmacy Manager, and later continued his career at Crystal Pharmacy. He was known not only for his professionalism and knowledge, but for his kindness, warmth, and genuine care for those he served.
A man of deep faith, Pat was a lifelong and devoted member of the Catholic Church and an active parishioner at St. Thomas. His faith guided his life and was evident in his generosity, humility, and unwavering love for others.
Pat was a man who brought people together. He was known for his welcoming spirit, his unforgettable smile, his playful irreverence, his keen wit, and his love of celebration. Whether hosting gatherings, sharing stories, or simply spending time with those he loved, he made everyone feel like family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Elaine; his sister, Ann Higgins; his brother, John McCarthy; his children, Shannon (Gil) Gassuan, Stacy Gardner, Patrick (Lisa) McCarthy, and Katie (Joel) Datica; his cherished grandchildren, Andrew, Danny, Tyler, Mackenzie, and Devan; and his great-grandchild, Imogen. All carry forward his legacy of love, faith, and strength.
Pat’s life was one of joy, devotion, and service. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and forever remembered by those whose lives he touched.
