James Patrick Neal, affectionately known as Pat, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, at McLeod Health Seacoast in Little River, South Carolina, having just had his 80th birthday.

Born on February 28, 1946, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Myrick Neal and Margaret Neal Snell. Pat spent his formative years in Wilson, North Carolina. He graduated from Fike High School and went on to earn an undergraduate degree, a master's degree, and a six-year degree in education from East Carolina University. These achievements laid the foundation for a career in educational leadership.

Pat's career in educational leadership, as a principal, began at New Dotmond Elementary School in Caswell County. He later served as principal at Peterson Elementary School and Red Springs High School in Red Springs, North Carolina. His leadership journey continued at Northeastern High School in Elizabeth City and concluded with roles at Bertie County High School and Bertie Elementary School in Bertie County.

Outside of his professional life, Pat embraced life with passion. In his late 20's and 30s, he played rugby in Caswell County and Red Springs, enjoying the camaraderie of the sport. Pat and his wife, Mary loved traveling and spending time sailing. Above all, he cherished time with his family—especially with his beloved daughter Amy Elizabeth Neal and grandson Logan Jameson Young, who lovingly called him "Pappy." Pat and Mary's two dogs, Corabelle and Hannah , were constant sources of joy.

Pat is survived by his wife Mary Neal; his daughter Amy Elizabeth Neal (Thomas Young); his grandson Logan Jameson Young; and many friends whose lives he touched. He was predeceased in death by his parents James Myrick Neal and Margaret Neal Snell and his brother, Gary Neal.

Family and friends are invited to visit with Amy and her family at her home (751 Caswell Pines Clubhouse Dr., Blanch, NC) on Friday, March 13 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Pat to New Hope United Methodist Church, c/o Treasurer Ken Baker, 514 Lake Pointe Dr., Yanceyville, NC 27379 or the Animal Protection Society of Caswell County, P O Box 193, Yanceyville, NC 27379.

Pat's legacy as an educator, family man, and friend will live on through those who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.
