James Edward Rufo, 86, passed away peacefully at home Monday, February 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Jim was the devoted husband of Susan J. Rufo (née Romoser), with whom he shared 63 years of marriage; and a proud, loving father to Ann Barth, who preceded him in death (Brian), Allison Johnson (Daniel), Amy Cornwell (Robert Morris), James A. Rufo (Anna, née Cacchione), and A.J. Rufo (Kimberly, née Mostyn). He was a cherished grandfather to John Hooks, Aaron Hall, Savannah Sexton (Hope Bocchi), James A. Rufo, Jr. (J.J.), Gabi Rufo, Josie Rufo, Julian Johnson, Lucy Rufo, Bubba (Anthony) Rufo, Scarlett Johnson, Liam Johnson, and Vivian Johnson; and great-grandfather to Drake Hooks. He is survived by his brother, Frank Rufo (Frances).

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Theresa Rufo (née Swietynowski); and his sister, Margaret Simko (Pete).

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, later serving his community as a Councilman for the City of Lorain, Seventh Ward. He was an estimator for mechanical contracting by trade, respected for his dedication, reliability, and hands-on problem-solving.

A man of many interests, Jim had a curious spirit and was known for diving into new hobbies with enthusiasm before moving on to the next great idea. He found special peace in the simple moments, especially watching birds, a quiet pastime that brought him joy. He was an avid Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Guardians fan. He will be remembered for his steady presence, gentle humor, curiosity about life, and the deep love he had for his family.

Friends and family are welcome to gather from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, February 21, 2026 in Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church in Lorain, Ohio. A brief service will follow. In accordance with his wishes, Jim donated his body for research to the Cleveland Clinic.

Jim leaves behind a legacy of service, hard work, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
