James Alexander Stacey, born March 22, 1949, passed away unexpectedly at his home on November 24th, 2025. Born in Asopos, Greece, he immigrated to the Chicago area in 1975 to pursue an education and stayed to work and build a family.
A teacher by trade, Jim's life was characterized by the constant pursuit of knowledge. He was a voracious reader who believed that anything could be learned through the written word, patience, and trial-and-error. This was evident in the multitude of pursuits in which he excelled—visual arts, carpentry, philosophy, gardening, culinary arts, and mathematics, among many others. He believed that there was beauty in precision and was never satisfied with mediocrity.
The community bore witness to his generous spirit, as he took pride in giving freely of his time and talent. Whether it was using his construction skills to build furniture for a classroom or his mechanical skills to restore heat to a neighbor's home, he relished the opportunity to serve others.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; son, Alexander (Rebekah) Stathakis; grandchildren, Chiara and Luca; and sister, Amalia (Demetrios) Iatropoulos.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public service. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy consider making a donation to their favorite charity.
