James "Jim" Sullivan, of Plainfield, IL, passed away peacefully on Friday December 19, 2025, in Bolingbrook Hospital from stroke complications.
Born in Chicago, Jim (sometimes Jimmy) grew up in the neighborhoods of Hyde Park and Kenwood. He fondly recalled his days as a top-notch park district ping pong player defeating his opponents with a wicked array of spins, slams, and delicate drops. Other childhood memories include swimming and jumping off the rocks into Lake Michigan, frequent hide-and-seek games in the Museum of Science and Industry and watching the U505 submarine hauled out of Lake Michigan across the beach across Lake Shore (DuSable) Drive and onto the museum grounds.
Jim held only a handful of jobs over his 40-year career. Starting as a paperboy, into an A&P stock boy, he progressed into delivery driver positions with Coca-Cola, UPS, and Marshall Field's. He was especially proud of those companies, the customers he served, and his spotless driving record.
Jim married the love of his life, Barbara, on Valentine's Day in 1959 and spent 48 years together. In 1961, after a near call-up from the Army Reserves during the troubles in Cuba, they moved to Glendale Heights and raised their family. Jim and Barb retired to Carillon in Plainfield, IL in the late 90s spending their days with old and new friends, travelling, golfing and frequent trips to Door County and New Buffalo.
Jim loved his family and friends, the Bears, the White Sox, the Cubs, movies (most notably westerns and romantic comedies), Chicago, Carillon, golf, poker nights, and card games of any type but especially poker.
He is predeceased by his parents, June E. Evans and Cornelius R. Sullivan, his wife Barbara C. Sullivan nee Anderson. He is survived by his children Michael (Kathleen), Jacqui (John) Slominski, and his grandchildren Elizabeth (Andrew) Mogensen, Mary Sullivan, and Emma and Andrew Slominski.
A private Celebration of Life to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to your favorite charity, the
American Heart Association, or the
American Cancer Society in Jim's name.
