Jamia Newsome Irons, aged 36, passed away on November 18, 2025, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Born on April 24, 1989, Jamia dedicated her life to education, faith, and the arts, enriching the lives of those around her with her talents and commitment.
A gifted educator, Jamia taught 10th Grade American Literature and 11th Grade AP Language before advancing her career as a Content Specialist and Educational Coach with Teach for America from 2015 to 2017. She later served as the Assistant School Leader of KIPP High School in 2018 and ascended to the role of School Principal in August 2023. Her passion for education and leadership profoundly impacted her students and colleagues.
Jamia was a vibrant member of her religious communities. She actively participated as a Praise Team Member at Full Gospel Church of God in Gary, Indiana, and on the Praise and Worship Team at Transformation Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her faith was a cornerstone of her existence, evident in her commitment to her church and community.
Her love for music was unparalleled. Jamia was accomplished in singing, playing the guitar, piano, and drums, often gracing various events with her performances. Additionally, she found joy in cooking and hosting, always eager to share her culinary creations with friends and family.
Jamia is survived by her husband, Juhon Irons; her parents, S. Phillip and Pamela H. Newsome; her sister, Tiffani N. Burns (Dewane); her brother, Phillip A. Newsome; and her nieces and nephew, Amaya, Ava, and Daniel Burns.
A memorial service will be held at the Temple of Deliverance on Saturday, December 6th, 2025, at 4929 W. 15th Ave., Gary, Indiana, at the 11:00 O'clock hour. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the Jamia Newsome Irons Scholarship Fund, accessible at bit.ly/jamiairons, to continue her legacy of supporting education and the arts.
