Jane Santangelo Mazzotta, a kind, giving and endlessly positive spirit, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2025, at the age of 86, surrounded by the love of family and friends. Jane and her late husband Guy were married for sixty-five years. She radiated energy, joy, and warmth and she had a unique gift for uplifting others and making every day brighter.
Born Jane Daniels Santangelo on November 9, 1939, in Middletown, Connecticut, she was the daughter of Earl and Ruth Santangelo. Her childhood home was located at Daniels Farm in Middletown, the family dairy farm. Jane was a “country girl” at heart and shared many stories of growing up on the farm with her cousins, who remained lifelong friends.
Jane loved the arts. She was a talented, self-taught, prolific artist whose talents seemed endless. She was a multi-medium artist including pastels, watercolors, charcoal, acrylics, fiber arts, leather and basketry. Each new medium provided opportunities to meet new people and form strong friendships. At the time of her passing, Jane was knitting a blanket for her greatly anticipated first great-granddaughter, due in December. Her deep love for music included rock, folk, bluegrass, and country. Inspired by the American folk music scene, she and her husband, Guy, played two Guild acoustic guitars regularly for family and friends. In her fifties, Jane taught herself the mountain dulcimer, attending New England Dulcimer Days in Bennington, Vermont was a highlight of her summer for years. She loved to perform with her friends in their group Serendipity, and she was a cherished member of the larger ensemble, The Shoreliners.
Cape Cod was Jane’s happy place, and she spent as much time as she could there over the years, collecting shells, sea glass and making her famous lobster rolls and clam chowder. On a summer evening, you could find her at O’Shea’s Olde Inn listening to Irish music or playing in a jam session.
In the summer, Jane could be found reading in her Adirondack chair with her feet in the sand of her mini “beach” she created at her home in Moodus. Her home which she loved to share with family and friends, was warm and inviting and filled with a lifetime of memories. She was a generous host and a wonderful cook, many who knew her affectionately called her a "relentless food pusher," who never sat down and sent you home with leftovers when you couldn’t eat another bite.
Her five grandchildren have many fond memories of “Grammy Camp”, a week-long, summer sleepover for all the cousins with many activities, exciting adventures and endless fun. Trips to the beach, mini-golf, unlimited snacks and the Dollar Store Talent shows were annual traditions.
Jane was always busy with a project, helping a friend or volunteering her time. She was an accomplished equestrian and was a lifetime member of the Connecticut Quarter Horse Association. As a member of the Nathan Hale Memorial Chapter of the National Society of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution, she was the editor of their award-winning newsletter “The Nathan Haler”. Jane also volunteered for Wreaths Across America and served as a docent at the Nathan Hale Schoolhouse in East Haddam.
Jane was loved and will be missed by many, as she made everyone feel both loved and accepted. Her legacy will live on as we share our memories and skills she has taught us. Family and friends (often the lines were blurred as family were friends and friends were family) meant the world to Jane. Once a friend of Jane’s, always a friend as evidenced by her many lifelong childhood and decades long friendships.
Jane is survived by her loving sons: Glenn Mazzotta (wife Pauline), Dean Mazzotta (wife Betsy), Greg Mazzotta (wife Jeanette), and Jason Mazzotta (wife Annie). She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren: Lauren Mazzotta (husband Tyler Bean), Nick Mazzotta (wife Kristen), Julia Mazzotta (fiancé Daniel), Alex Mazzotta, and Anthony Mazzotta (fiancé Bethany).
Her family extends their heartfelt thanks to the incredible Middlesex Hospital Hospice staff for the compassionate care they provided, keeping Jane comfortable during her final days.
A celebration of Jane’s life will be scheduled and announced at a later date.
