Janice Marie Goodwin (Montague)
July 17, 1949 - November 3, 2019
Janice Marie Goodwin (née Montague) passed peacefully on November 3, 2019. She rests at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California, laid to rest alongside her beloved father.
Born on July 17, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan, Janice was the daughter of Earl Joseph Montague and Flora Pauline Kops. She hailed from a distinguished lineage of German and Irish immigrants whose deep sense of duty led multiple generations to serve honorably in both World Wars. Her paternal grandfather, Earl Joseph Montague I, and her maternal grandfather, Paul Max Kops of Germany, were both veterans of World War I.
Her father, Earl Joseph Montague, was a World War II United States Marine veteran and a member of the California Bar. In the 1950s, he relocated the family from Detroit to Pasadena, California to serve as counsel within the Defense Contract Administration Services Region (DCASR) for Southern California, contributing to the legal oversight of critical defense and aerospace programs during a pivotal era in American history. Her mother, Flora Pauline Kops, devoted many years of professional service to The Aerospace Corporation, an American nonprofit organization operating a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) and serving as a leading architect of the nation's space programs, advancing capabilities essential to U.S. national security and leadership in space.
Janice's life was guided by a profound commitment to peace, spiritual awakening, and the upliftment of humanity. She dedicated herself fully to spiritual pursuits and to the loving care and raising of her family. In 1970, her spiritual path deepened following her meeting with Paramahansa Yogananda, and in 1975 she encountered Baba Muktananda—an experience that would define the course of her life. Thereafter, Janice devoted the majority of her life to serving Swami Muktananda's spiritual movement, working at its headquarters in New York and spending time volunteering at the ashram in Ganeshpuri, India. Her service was marked by humility, devotion, and a steadfast belief in the divine potential within every individual.
In her later years, Janice continued her lifelong pursuit of spiritual understanding through advanced study with the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness (MSIA), where she pursued a master's degree. MSIA is a nondenominational, ecumenical church that teaches that each individual is divine and capable of knowing their own divinity—principles Janice embodied through compassion, gentleness, and unwavering faith.
Janice was preceded in death by her second son, Charles Goodwin II, who passed on February 8, 2011, and by her brother, James Paul Montague, a United States Navy veteran and member of the California Bar, who passed on November 5, 2002 and is interred at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma, California.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Charles Goodwin, and her beloved son, Jeremy Goodwin, by whom she is deeply loved and remembered.
Janice Marie Goodwin lived as a devoted servant of God and of humanity. Her life was one of quiet strength, deep spirituality, and unconditional love—an enduring light that continues to guide and inspire all who knew her.
