Janice Nelson, 73, of Richland, Missouri, passed away peacefully at her home on Jan. 7, 2026, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, and her presence will be deeply missed.

Born Janice Ann Dolney on Feb. 25, 1952, to Theodore and Doris (Hoffer) Dolney in Vermillion, S.D. She attended Catholic grade school, public high school, and met the love of her life, Gerald Nelson, of Centerville, S.D., while they were both students at the University of South Dakota. The couple married in 1972, and Janice earned a business degree from the University of South Dakota and later went on to pursue an MBA.

Janice had a real affinity for numbers, leading her to a successful career in the banking industry. She began with CitiBank headquarters in Sioux Falls, S.D., later transferring to their Kansas City offices. She and Gerald resided in nearby Blue Springs, Mo., where they raised their three boys and spent most evenings and weekends as soccer parents. Janice later took a position with JPMorgan Chase & Co in St. Joseph, Mo., and finished her career with Deutsche Bank in their Kansas City office.

Janice decided to retire several years early after being diagnosed with cancer, and she ultimately won her long and arduous battle with a very aggressive form of breast cancer. As she was recovering from that victory, she and Gerald purchased agricultural land near Richland and built their retirement home there in 2022, enjoying the beautiful sunset each day from their hillside home.

Throughout her life Janice dearly loved her family, her pets and her crafting – and she especially loved creating and gifting elaborate bead jewelry and home baked treats.

Janice is survived by her husband, Gerald, their three sons, Jeremy Nelson (Cate), Matthew Nelson and Theodore Nelson (Maribel), three granddaughters, Elizabeth Nelson, Doris Nelson, and Joy Nelson, and four siblings, Mary Fitzpatrick (Rick), of Sioux Falls, S.D., Thomas Dolney (Lori) of Rapid City, S.D., Carol Vaca (Tony) of Sioux Falls, and Dorothy Pederson (Mark) of Sioux Falls.

Her life will be celebrated by family and close friends with a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Janice’s memory to the Cornerstone Baptist Church PO BOX 689, Richland, MO 65556 or BAYADA Home Health Care Donations PO Box 536039 Pittsburgh, PA 15253-5902.

Although Janice is no longer with us, her disciplined work ethic, deep love of family, and creative spirit will live on through her children and grandchildren.
