Janice McDaniel Shelnutt was born on June 3,1936 in Wheeler County, GA. She passed away on May 23, 2024 in Atlanta, GA at the age of 87 surrounded by her family.

She lived in Decatur, GA most of her adult life and was married for 63 years to and survived by her true love, Bob J. Shelnutt of Decatur, GA. She is survived by Cynthia Shelnutt Smith (Phillip) of Lexington, SC and John McDaniel Shelnutt (Kimberly) of McKinney, TX, four grandchildren, who lovingly called her "GranJan," Catherine Paige Smith of Austin, TX, Hunter Elizabeth Smith of Cologne, Germany, Tyler Shelnutt Hansen (Adam) of Austin, TX, and U.S. Army Lt. Griffin McDaniel Shelnutt (Cheyenne) of Anna, TX, and two great-grandchildren, Blakely Kay Shelnutt and Presley Ann Shelnutt of Anna, TX. She was the daughter of Evelyn and Willard McDaniel of Glenwood, GA and is also survived by her brothers, Gary McDaniel (Elaine) of Newport News, VA, Ted McDaniel of Highlands, NC, and Greg McDaniel of Jacksonville, FL, and her brother in law, Max Shelnutt (Betty) of Sharpsburg, GA.

Janice's world revolved around education. After graduating as valedictorian from Glenwood High School, she graduated from Young Harris College, LaGrange College, and the University of Georgia where she obtained a total of four degrees. She began her career as an elementary school English teacher, eventually becoming head media specialist at Shamrock High School in Decatur, GA and then moving to a county wide library program position prior to her retirement. Her students are her legacy.

She was actively involved in her community and her beloved church, Lawrenceville Road United Methodist Church.
