Janice was born in Freeport, Illinois in 1926. She was the second of three daughters born to Marjorie and Clarence Young. A vibrant and inquisitive child, she became an accomplished musician, playing both flute and piano. She also loved to sing and participated in various choirs throughout her life.
Jan graduated with honors from Freeport High School and went on to receive a degree in political science from Oberlin College, where she met her husband, Edward Stowell. Jan's intellectual curiosity remained a key facet of her personality. She always kept abreast of what was going on in the world and was never without a book (or two) nearby. Her friends will attest that she was always deeply interested in their lives. She made the people around her feel valued and recognized.
She deeply loved the natural world; flowers and birds and all living creatures. A natural athlete, she sailed, skied, danced, and played golf and tennis. Possessing a proverbial green thumb, she was a great gardener and always kept plants growing around her.
Jan was the consummate "people person". She loved to cook and entertain. She always found ways to be engaged in community activities; church membership, volunteer work, the League of Women Voters, the PTA and so much more. As she and Ted moved from Ohio to Illinois and eventually to Florida, she made deep and enduring friendships everywhere she went.
We shall cherish our memories of Jan and always remember the never failing love and kindness shown to all who knew her.
