Jean Marie Leonard

1926 - 2025

Jean Marie Leonard (née Frederickson), age 98, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025, in Surprise, Arizona. Born on October 21, 1926, in Morgan, Minnesota, Jean lived a long and fulfilling life marked by dedication to her family, career, and community.

Jean began her professional journey as the Deputy Treasurer for Redwood County, Minnesota, in the early 1950s. She later worked as an assistant to the president of Deluxe Corporation. After the birth of her children, Jean chose to focus her energy on being a devoted homemaker, a role she embraced wholeheartedly.

Jean's life was enriched by her passions and hobbies. She was an avid gardener whose skill and care created stunning floral displays that brought joy to all who saw them. A lover of card games, Jean found happiness in gathering with family and friends around the card table. She also volunteered at her children's school as a Junior Great Books leader and was an active member of The St. Paul Sail and Power Squadron for over 25 years. In her retirement years, Jean travelled extensively. She enjoyed well over 100 cruises, and visited every continent.

Throughout her life, Jean maintained cherished friendships across the many places she called home, including Albany, New York; Duluth and Bloomington, Minnesota; Cape Coral, Florida; and Surprise, Arizona. Her warmth and ability to connect with others left a lasting impression wherever she went.

Jean is survived by her sons John (Karen) Leonard and Steven Leonard; grandchildren Sarah Leonard and Andrew (Lindsey) Leonard; and great-grandchildren Madelyn Jean, Caleb, and Aubrey. She is also survived by her brother Dennis (Marj) Frederickson; sister Diane Raatz; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Louis and Mary Frederickson; her loving husband of 49 years, J. Paul Leonard M.D.; brothers Milton Frederickson and Kenneth (Marion) Frederickson; sister Eunice (Bernard) Cranston; brother-in-law Robert Raatz; as well as nephews Timothy Frederickson and Donovan Raatz.

Jean's legacy is one of love, kindness, and devotion to those around her. Her memory will be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her life serve as an inspiration to cherish family bonds and nurture meaningful connections with others.
